If you chose to download the Breathe Slow collection of audio tracks to your computer, you’ll get four tracks for each breathing rate. In other words, there will be four audio tracks with breathing prompts for 10 breaths per minute, four for 8 breaths per minute, and so on.
Most people will find six per minute a good target to aim for and very beneficial when mastered. Five per minute is harder to achieve for many and not strictly necessary for stress and blood pressure reduction. The direct download version also contains 4 tracks of a very slow four breaths per minute cycle. These extra tracks included with the direct download version is really for breathing exercise gurus.
Relaxing background music (or just the breathing prompts)
If you’ve played more than one of these samples you’ll have noticed that they have different kinds of background music accompanying the breathing prompts. This is because studies have found that listening to relaxing music can lower blood pressure. It’s also good for stress reduction and calming yourself in general. And initial research suggests listening to relaxing music can reduce menopausal hot flashes (hot flushes).
Of these four audio tracks, 3 have different kinds of ambient background music, which you can hear in the samples above. The fourth track is just the breathing prompts without any background music. This gives you the option of following the breathing prompts on their own.
Alternatively you can play your own background music to accompany them. This is quite important because studies have found that the effects of music on blood pressure depend to some extent on how you personally respond to the piece of music. With the breathing-prompts-only track, you can select music that you find particularly uplifting and relaxing to play along with it. This way you can experience more profound blood pressure-reducing effects.
Slow breathing exercises for hypertension, stress reduction, anxiety relief, pain relief, sleep, or general chilling
Breathing slowly is the quickest way to lower your blood pressure without medication. It’s also a great stress reliever. And slow breathing exercises are particularly good for relieving anxiety, for easing insomnia and helping you sleep, and can also be very effective for pain relief and for reducing hot flashes during the menopause.
Even slowing down your breathing briefly will have an effect. However, for maximum therapeutic benefits, it’s recommended that you practice slow breathing for at least fifteen minutes a day. This will really allow your body to relax and respond.
Medical studies have clearly demonstrated the immediate effects of slow breathing for lowering blood pressure and stress. The long-term effects are less well understood. However, it’s thought that practicing slow breathing exercises daily can help keep your blood pressure (and stress levels) down more generally.
The full-length Breathe Slow audio tracks are fifteen minutes long. This allows you to get into the rhythm and experience the full benefits of slow breathing exercises for hypertension or stress reduction or just the general joy of relaxation!
